Member of the Order of Canada, Juno Award winner, two-time Polaris Music Prize long listed artist... Art Bergmann has been honoured by his home country in a multitude of ways. But behind the accolades is still a man coping with the unforgiving realities of life as he enters his seventies.

ShadowWalk -- released Sept. 29 via (weewerk) -- is Bergmann’s ode to Sherri Decembrini, his beloved wife of 30 years who passed away unexpectedly in March 2022. The album’s 12 songs capture the darkness, grief and desolation that comes from such a soul crushing loss, while also offering genuine hope that life will go on.

Recorded at Turtle Sound South Surrey and IDIO Studio in Surrey, BC, ShadowWalk is an album for everyone who has loved, lost, and continues to live. Many of the songs were co-written with B.C. poet Patricia Kay, while Art’s longtime friend and fellow songwriter Donna Kerbel penned one track. Produced by Russell Broom and Wes Smith, Broom also contributed much of the music and soundscapes for the album as well.

Additional contributors to ShadowWalk include Paul Rigby (pedal steel), Aidan Farrell (vocals), Owen Owen Owen (bass), Adam Drake (drums), Sunny Matharu (tabla) and Katie Mosehauer & the Glass Heart String Orchestra (strings). The album has been mastered by Greg Reely and will be released on vinyl, as well as on all digital platforms.

The album recording was supported by Creative BC and the Province of British Columbia. Special Thanks to all our generous GoFundMe donors for helping make this album possible. Utmost gratitude to Stephen Rioux, Jay Smales and (weewerk) for financing the vinyl pressing. All photography by P. Kay except back cover photo by Sherri. All layouts and graphics by Art and Marc Floyd. Eternal gratitude to TeamArt members Colin Smith, Jason Schneider, Gord Withers and Gordon Celesta. Executive Producer Phil Klygo (weewerk).

By Sherri's Grace Naomi and Zoe are forever. Thank you Patricia Kay for life itself. Thanks to Hans and Sharon Bergmann for their sheltering kindness.

Now back in Vancouver, where in the late 1970s he was a driving force behind the city's punk rock scene, Bergmann will launch ShadowWalk with a show at The Rickshaw Theatre, on Friday Sept. 29. The night will also include a group discussion about his 2022 authorized biography, The Longest Suicide, with its author Jason Schneider along with moderator Aaron Chapman. Art will also have a Toronto release show at The Horseshoe Tavern on Thursday November 2nd.

Includes unlimited streaming of ShadowWalk by Art Bergmann via the free Bandcamp app, plus high-quality download in MP3, FLAC and more.

Jagged/One 02:31
Today called most unexpectedly No one appeared to be home Inside the hotknife of memory One jagged word. One. There is no going back from the descent Whatever you saw is gone How can I live with these nightmares Returning to me every dawn? I rule the mornings well crowned Nights strip my royal robes bare How can I live with these nightmares When truly I am not really here? Grant me one grace – some forgetting Give me the kiss of the Sun Steal now that hotknife of memory One jagged word. Just one

She walks these fields A hungry ghost Drinking in sunlight To overdose Kiss of the syringe Cuts through scars Glimpse of heaven? Cold night stars The people here can't see Weather gone weird What they don't understand They condemn in fear She smiles They demand her name "I'm the witch, You turned to flames" There is no crack That lets in the light There is no light To bridge this dark divide Grief is the prize If you stay alive "Let's do it your way!" Our love hard 'cri de coeur' Even when pariahs In our film without a score Anything less We kicked out the door "Weren't you born, Love's what we're here for!" There is no crack That lets in the light There is no light To bridge this dark divide Grief is the prize If you stay alive So what can I give To finally relieve A song worth nothing That no one believes A love larger Than the national bore l'd kill the world bank For one second more There is no crack That lets in the light There is no light To bridge this dark divide Grief is the prize If you're left alive Always surprised If alive Grief is the prize When you wake She walks these fields She walks these fields She walks the sky Above the fire I wanna do it your way

Now who takes our dead We give them up to priests and lawyers Instead of shrunken heads You get a bill For dying Come collect our dead Take our money While we’re crying And what were you thinking of When sleep took you home I wish to never wake Dream the glitter of The Sun Behind your eyes I guess you kindly folx Can go safely down the road Tales made in your empty heads Sure makes for hungry souls So you picked the carcass clean And the souvenirs all sold It’s one too many Sundays My blood runs cold So darkness stained the family name It followed on like Jesus' lame Stories 'bout our women as witches whores and men! Our home wasn't the best, certainly wasn't the worst If you come back now angel We'll make the first godless home to outlast this curse Killing Sunday (x4) When she died, the family brayed Not one true word was said So we made a collective incision Slashed some Christian throats instead And “Sundays are no more” Became Our Monday morning cheer The cult was dead, food was shared, And women were not scared Killing Sunday (x4) I guess you folx can go safely down the road You can add how little you knew before, to what you don’t know now Though I am impressed by your great ignorance … your feigned innocence When they have you cloistered like an imprisoned sow You won’t even question Why or how Killing Sundays (x8)

As tears fall Let them bathe me Release me Let my love free In sickness and health And in this hell I will still love you My life, needs Love In reverie Comes on a Westerley Caresses and holds me Blessed In a warm wind kiss Life's Love you give Here shall I Live Are we so dead We deny our own eyes Are we so dead We can't see Love Abides Love comes to me In reverie Comes on your Westerley Caresses and holds me Blessed In your warm wind kiss Life's Love you give Here shall we Live

Love3 05:00
I haunt this haus of horror Guard my grimoire of grief Succor and suffocate in sorrow Just like a faith-shattered priest Yea, I slum through the alley Of howling evil despair Flaunt my faux-ny street cred To run the gauntlet there She comes to me,the wounded warrior At the Gathering Feast She sings of love of hereafter others Proposing Grace's Release So come to me,ye wounded lovers Your keening will surlease Burning possessions diaretic obsessions Light up the litter of love Shoot the works thru veiny contractions Still backed up in memory's swamp Regret wears thin In this old skin Now you're gone Your voice is dim When I was all I missed your call Yet even now Still somehow I hear your plaint: "Use your youth while you can Give your love when Alive"

Impotence 04:31
This the light oblique The time between where we meet 'Tis the evening calm Where we melt all night long Here in the pause inside In night's connect to day-I hide From the sad,the deep dolour The great hard sorrow On bright warm days I turn to the storm within Committing every mortal sin I have forgotten how to live To walk the world in this same skin Engage in small vulgarities Mumble strange inanities I am not here at all My shade awaits in my hell Built by my mind, it long endures All incursions sent from here For a moment, I relent Dream small cessations of torment But back I slide, importunate Embrace myself, in descent The guilt, the grief, it's my prize To leave it would be compromise In this commitment to before I shall remain behind this door The hallowing for me alone In this my tomb, I will atone The pain and ache I cannot shrug For what I have professed to love These horrors take shape in the night Slide inside, to jab and bite In lilac shadows that persist My waking mind all violent mist I refuse to say I did not fall, or Pretend I stumbled not at all I must not repress how close I came To make this world forget my name This is the light oblique

WinterFire 05:38
Seconds taking minutes aching hours Since she's gone, it's undeniable Would it be easier, to fake a smile And just go down I can try, choking on tears Try, massaging my fears Try, wasting more years Park my love...out in the cold I build myself WinterFire To warm a soul, out in the cold Hoping she appears Sinistral spiral Through the stars she's streaming I sift my ashes smoke and mist Off my knees she lifts me Our dream is in her kiss Leave now behind your darkling lament Seize on the dream I send Never forget It's undeniable You've got to try To find me I'm here in your WinterFire My eyes cool in sleep Between my nightly weeps In dreams love's still burning Is she returning? Across the stars she wanders Breaking the wave I'm under Between the worlds she's walking, calling In echoes she whispers these words This love we share Is not from here Seize on the gift I send It's in her kiss It's Undeniable You've got to try To find me Try and never forget I'm here in your WinterFire She lives in my desire She lives in my desire

I'm raw nervy memory Locked and fused in lover's lightning I'm burning it off Just like yesterday's skin Raw naked Monday Lies ripe in her room Alllove on Monday Laid out in a swoon No longer a vision No longer strange We sleepin' fitful We play Kama Sutra Supreme Awaken from each way Into happy smiling new dream Its a secular service We've got sanctified sin So so sacred Monday Jealous friends never get in No longer a vision No longer strange Professin' confessin' You know she sears like the sun We make love incandescent We live and love in Illumination

Please, a hymn for all of us We who live and who we lost Who searched for love at life’s cost Please, a hymn for all of us May they live in Elysian fields In blinding beauty that does not yield Memory’s treasure we always feel Roll away the stone that seals In darkest night may you dream Of wildling light that you seek That glory sparks in every child If built into a fire Yea glory sparks in every child Help them build a lasting fire Of Love before they learn to lie Give them Love that never dies In Our Love’s a legacy A legacy of Love (x2) Place seeds of life in every gun No, don’t flinch it must be done Shoot them hard into the ground Make growing joy the only sound All creatures hear the sacred psalm As broken hearts sing all night long The timeless plea: “Let kindness be The future for you and me” In our Love a legacy A legacy of Love Legacy of Love
